Pet Dentistry

If you are the new owner of a cat or dog, you are likely to want to care for your pet to the best of your ability. Pet dentistry is every bit as important as tending to other parts of your pet's body. If your pet requires dental care or if your pet is suffering from a dental difficulty, contact Parkview Animal Hospital in Lincoln to meet with one of our veterinarians. Read on to learn the signs of a dental problem, how to help your pet's oral hygiene at home, and what our vet can do to help.

The Signs of a Dental Problem in Pets

There are a few signs that indicate your pet is dealing with a dental issue. If you observe any of these signs in your pet you should seek treatment for your pet without delay. If your pet suddenly changes his or her eating pattern or seems to have trouble eating without pain, a dental problem could be the reason why. A pet with bad breath may be suffering from decayed teeth. A broken tooth can cause your pet quite a bit of pain. Your pet may also have cuts on the interior of the mouth from sharp edges.

How to Care For Your Pet's Teeth

It is important to take the time to clean your dog or cat's teeth at home. If you have difficulty performing this task, our veterinarian is available to do the procedure for you. At home, you can brush your pet's teeth using a pet toothbrush and a meat-flavored pet toothpaste. These are obtainable from a pet supply store. Place a small dab of paste on the brush and use it to whisk away debris from the surfaces of your pet's teeth. You may only be able to brush a few teeth at a time during a session. In time, however, some pets get used to the procedure and allow for more teeth to be brushed during a sitting. Tartar-control treats also help in the removal of bacteria and hardened plaque from your pet's teeth.

What Our Veterinarian Will Do

If your pet is suffering from a broken tooth, sore gums, bad breath, gingivitis, or another dental problem, our veterinarian will assess the situation and provide treatment as necessary. Our veterinarian is also available for medical emergencies, such as when a tooth needs to be pulled. Pet dentistry services, such as scaling or brushing a pet's teeth, are available during routine appointments as well.
