What Is Soft Tissue Surgery?

This is any surgery not related to bones or joints. It can be routine elective procedures such as neuters and spays to much more complicated intra-abdominal surgeries. Our veterinary personnel do a careful evaluation that determines whether or not your pet requires soft tissue surgery. We strive to make your pet’s procedure as safe and comfortable as possible before, during, and after the surgery. Our veterinarians use the safest and most effective anesthesia and analgesia during soft tissue surgery to manage your pet’s pain. We will closely monitor your pet’s vitals throughout the process.

Signs That Your Pet Is in Need of Medical Attention

Bring your dog or cat in for a check-up and medical attention if you notice signs that your pet may be in pain. Our qualified veterinarians will conduct an evaluation and come up with the best procedure for your pet’s well-being. The following signs indicate that a pet may need soft tissue surgery:

  • Abnormal lumps and bumps that you can see or feel
  • Straining to urinate
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting

Diagonostic tests such as blood work, X-ray, and ultrasound may be used to diagnose your pet. Our veterinarians can perform soft tissue procedures on internal organs, skin, and muscles depending on the diagnosis. Common soft tissue procedures include surgeries to remove digestive blockages, reconstructive surgeries, cancer-related surgeries, and repairing damage caused by traumatic events. Surgery can be done to remove a tumor. When a dog or cat has a potentially cancerous mass, we treat it much like tumors in humans, and when possible, our veterinarian will remove it. In such cases, further diagnostics may be recommended to determine what type of tumor we are dealing with so that the best post-operative plan can be determined.

Care After Surgery

After surgery, your pet will remain in the hospital or will be under special care at home. Our veterinarian personnel will discuss post-operative care with you to better understand what the surgery will entail and what care will be needed.

Each surgery is different, but there are a few common post-operative care tips to help ensure your pet’s recovery goes well. If we are concerned about the pet’s well-being immediately after surgery, we may recommend a pet be kept at the hospital for a few days for observation following surgery. This may be required, mostly if the surgery was extensive, to ensure your pet recovers well from the initial post-operative period’s anesthesia.

Parkview Animal Hospital provides all types of soft tissue surgery for dogs and cats. However, in the rare instance that your pet’s procedure is not as common and more complex, our veterinarians may refer you to a Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon in the area that may specialize in the specific area of need for your pet. This is no different than being referred to a heart surgeon or ear, nose, and throat specialist in human medicine. Regardless of the situation, our team of staff and veterinarians will ensure that your pet is receiving the best surgical and post-operative care possible.
